Welcome to Awdry Class!

Welcome to our class page. We're looking forward to an exciting and successful year of learning together in Year 6.

Please take a look at the Curriculum Overview attached for more information about what we'll be learning this term.

You'll also find our Homework Grid for the term. We encourage children to complete the activities at a pace that works for them and to choose tasks that interest and challenge them.

We love seeing learning that happens beyond the classroom, so please share any completed homework or special projects on your child's Class Dojo portfolio.

In addition, children should aim to:

  • Read every day.
  • Practise their times tables regularly on TT Rock Stars.
  • Continue learning and exploring the world around them.

2026-2027 Autumn Term

An Exciting Autumn Term of Learning in Awdry

We're looking forward to a busy and exciting Autumn Term in Awdry as we begin Year 6 and embark on what is a really important year in the children's primary school journey.

This term is all about building confidence, developing independence and setting high expectations for ourselves. Alongside lots of exciting new learning, we'll be focusing on the skills, resilience and responsibility needed to make this a successful and enjoyable year for everyone.

In English, we will be developing our writing through a range of exciting genres, including beating-the-monster tales, portal stories, explanation texts and discussions. We'll be focusing on crafting engaging narratives and presenting clear, well-reasoned ideas for different audiences and purposes.

In Maths, we will be building strong foundations through place value, the four operations, measures, fractions, decimals and percentages. We'll also be developing our understanding of algebra and statistics whilst continuing to strengthen our reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Our History learning will take us back to the events of World War I, where we will explore its causes, life on the Western Front and the impact of the war both at home and abroad. Later in the term, we'll investigate the Suffragette movement and discover how determined individuals helped bring about change and secure voting rights for women.

In Geography, we'll develop our understanding of the wider world through map work, latitude and longitude, time zones and map projections. We will then turn our attention to important issues affecting Britain today, including climate change, pollution, waste and litter, considering how our actions can make a difference.

In Science, we will explore the fascinating workings of the human body, learning about the heart, circulation and how blood transports essential substances around the body. Later in the term, we'll become scientists as we classify living things and learn how organisms are grouped and identified.

In RE, we will explore key stories and teachings from the New Testament as part of our Understanding Christianity work. We will also consider the relationship between creation and science, discussing different viewpoints and reflecting on some big questions about the world around us.

Through PSHE, we will focus on working together effectively, understanding our emotions and developing important communication skills. We will also learn about rights, responsibilities, democracy and how decisions are made both within school and in wider society.

In Music, we'll develop our listening, performing and composing skills through our learning about pop music and jazz, exploring rhythm, performance and improvisation.

Our Latin lessons will continue to bring the Roman world to life as we learn more about Roman families and food, whilst strengthening our understanding of language and culture.

In Computing, we will develop our programming skills and apply our knowledge to create our own digital games and projects.

In Art, we will immerse ourselves in the world of the Italian Renaissance, studying influential artists including Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. We'll explore a range of artistic techniques, architecture and sculpture whilst creating our own inspired pieces of work.

In Design and Technology, we will develop our understanding of food technology, exploring how food is prepared and considering the importance of healthy choices.

And in PE, we'll stay active and develop our teamwork, coordination and resilience through Forest School, tag rugby, gymnastics and hockey.

As always, thank you for your continued support. Working together helps us ensure every child can achieve their very best.
